Brief History of Holy Trinity Anglican Church Kulende, Ilorin

by Demola Olarewaju, Church Secretary

During one of its monthly meetings at St. Barnabas Cathedral, Ilorin, the Diocesan Missionary Society (D.M.S) expressed its desire to establish a church at Kulende axis of the Ilorin metropolis, on 10th May, 1983. After a long and an inconclusive discussion on the issue of the church planting, Late Sir Dr. Chief S.O. Bamigboye (in attendance) decided to take the bull by the horn and give the establishment of the church at Kulende Estate a trial.

Chief Bamigboye came back home to contact some of the Christians living within the Estate on the possibility of establishing a church, instead of going a long distance to Baboko to worship. In one accord, they accepted his suggestion and decided to use Dr. Bamigboye’s residence, No. 1., Iwalewa Street, Kulende Estate, Ilorin, as a litmus test to conduct a service, which happened to be the first service as a church, with the Host (Dr. Bamigboye) conducting the service on Sunday 22 May, 1983.

The report of the service, described as impressive, got back to the Cathedral and so the following Sunday, 29th May, 1983, the then Diocesan Late Rt. Rev. Haruna sent an ordained priest, Rev. S.A. Afolayan (who retired as a venerable before his glorious exit to eternity in 2014), to worship with them for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation. The Clergy observed that the previous Sunday marked the Pentecost (Whitsunday), which was the day the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples, after which they formed the universal Christian Church, while the following Sunday, which he (Rev. Afolayan) was in attendance, was the Trinity Sunday, by the Anglican Calendar.

From the above observation, the people were convinced that the church planted at Kulende was by the design of the Holy Spirit, who was the third person of the Almighty God the Head. These spectacular reasons made the brethren to reasonably and quickly conclude that the church should be named Holy Trinity Anglican Church, which has been so till today.

Not long after this, some plots of land were purchased by the people of God, to build a church, which eventually led to the foundation laying of the church building, performed by the first provost of the Cathedral, Late Ven. E.A. Falase on 17th December, 1983. It is, however, worthy of note that the church was using late Chief Bamigboye’s residence for its services pending the completion of its building on 1st of July, 1984, when the first service was conducted in the church with a thanksgiving to mark the second anniversary of the church, before it was later completed in 1985.

To the glory of God, the church experienced spiritual growth within a short period of time of its existence. The church, which commenced with 13 members of congregation (5 men, 8 women) in 1983, can now boast of a population of about 300 adults, minus the children. Above all, it has also given birth to other churches, which have qualified it for its present status of an Archdeaconry.

We also thank God that the aims and objectives of establishing the church, which is gospel propagation and evangelization to win souls for Christ, has been achieved in Kulende and its environs.

A lot of spiritual activities are also taking place through our church programs; Sunday Services, revivals, women’s fellowship, Bible Studies, Christian picnics during festivities, Elderly Ministry, among other programmes.

Praise God.
